Festivus: The ‘Seinfeld’ Holiday for One and All

Festivus, the quirky holiday introduced in the sitcom Seinfeld, has grown into a beloved celebration for those seeking an alternative to traditional festivities. The brainchild of Frank Costanza, the character played by Jerry Stiller, Festivus subverts commercialism and instead, injects humor, simplicity and absurdity into the holiday season. Air on the Greet, which has its day on Dec. 23, is marked by its familiar signposts: a plain aluminum pole, the “Airing of Grievances” and the “Feats of Strength.”

Allowing participants to air their grievances, the “Airing of Grievances” helps participants vent frustration, achieving a level of catharsis and connectedness. It’s a moment to gently tease the everyday things that annoy people or even to vent about greater grievances with family and friends — in a good-natured way. The “Feats of Strength,” usually a wrestling contest with whoever heads the household, adds a lighthearted, competitive note.

What makes Festivus hit is its inclusiveness and sense of humor. It is shedding itself of the pressures of perfection and excess and creating a place where everyone, regardless of their background or beliefs, can gather, share food, a laugh and some imperfections. What started as a fictional holiday has moved into the real world, gathering fans of Seinfeld and newcomers alike in a celebration of community and authenticity. And that, cherished, sometimes the best traditions are those we create ourselves.🎸🎷
