Thirty-eight people were killed and 29 were injured Wednesday in a tragic aviation accident when an Azerbaijan Airlines flight crashed a few miles from Kazakhstan’s Aktau.
The Embraer 190 passenger jet, known as Flight J2-8243, was flying from Azerbaijan to Russia when it was carrying 62 passengers and five crew members. Uzbek authorities said the plane was never in danger of leaving Kazakh airspace, but Kazakh officials said the aircraft had flown hundreds of miles off course before crashing on the Caspian Sea’s other side.

All 38 people on board, including the two pilots, were killed in the crash, authorities said. Emergency workers on the scene said that as of Wednesday afternoon, four bodies had been pulled from the water. Of the survivors, 29 have been hospitalized, including two children.
Kazakh officials later said that those onboard included 42 Azerbaijani citizens, 16 Russians and six Kazakhs, as well as three Kyrgyz. The survivors are being treated at hospitals nearby, and some are in critical condition, the officials said.
